ABOUT "DRIFTER"
An Elephant wanders the Elicharro Plains in Mara North Conservancy.
Elephant populations are a conservation success story of the last 30 years. Although still lower than it was 50 years ago, the population is now increasing annually thanks for conservation initiatives. Despite this, it is important not to become complacent, as an increasing population leads to more human-wildlife conflict with elephants destroying crops and being pushed closer to settlements.
I had already scouted this Elicharro Plains area of Mara North, knowing that the Acacia Trees would make a beautiful backdrop. After many visits, on this evening I finally got lucky, finding a herd of elephant wandering the plains. This matriarch was leading the way, with the rest of the herd following on.
